Pink Himalayan Salt: Why It's in Your Electrolytes

Pink Himalayan salt isn't just a kitchen trend. Here's the science behind why it belongs in a premium electrolyte formula — and what makes it different from regular table salt.

Pink Himalayan Salt: Why It's in Your Electrolytes

When people see pink Himalayan salt on an ingredient label, two things usually happen. Either they think it is a wellness gimmick — fancy salt that does the same thing as regular salt. Or they think it is some kind of superfood that cures everything.

The truth is somewhere in the middle, and it is actually more interesting than either of those takes.

Let me break it down from a clinical perspective.

What Makes It Different From Table Salt

Regular table salt is sodium chloride — nearly pure, heavily processed, with iodine added back in after refining strips it out. It does its job. But that is about all it does.

Pink Himalayan salt is also primarily sodium chloride, but it is minimally processed and retains a broader trace mineral profile — including potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and over 80 other trace minerals. The pink color comes from iron oxide, which is just a fancy way of saying a small amount of rust. Completely harmless. Actually kind of beautiful.

Now, to be clear — the trace mineral amounts are small. You are not going to replace a magnesium supplement with pink Himalayan salt. But the point is that you are getting sodium alongside a naturally occurring mineral matrix, the way nature packaged it, rather than a stripped-down industrial version.

For an electrolyte formula, that distinction matters.

Why Sodium Is the Electrolyte That Gets Overlooked

Everyone talks about potassium. Magnesium gets its moment. But sodium is quietly the most important electrolyte in your body's fluid balance system, and it is the one most people do not think about until something goes wrong.

Sodium regulates how much water stays in your bloodstream. It controls nerve signaling. It is the primary electrolyte lost when you sweat — and when you lose it without replacing it, your body starts pulling water from cells to compensate. That is when you feel it: the headache, the cramps, the weird foggy exhaustion that does not go away no matter how much water you drink.

I have seen this in the ICU. Hyponatremia — low sodium — is one of the more common electrolyte disorders we treat. And it does not only happen in extreme cases. Mild sodium depletion is something a lot of people walk around with daily and attribute to stress, bad sleep, or not enough coffee.

Some of the time, it is just sodium.

The Electrolyte Drink Problem

Here is the irony: most commercial electrolyte drinks are low on sodium. They lean on potassium and magnesium because those sound more wellness-forward. Sodium has a bad reputation from decades of low-sodium diet messaging.

But for hydration specifically — especially when you are sweating, working long shifts, doing hot yoga, or just living in a warm climate — sodium is what your body is actually screaming for.

Pink Himalayan salt gives you sodium in a minimally processed form, with trace minerals still intact. It dissolves cleanly, it does not have the harsh chemical edge that some highly refined salts do, and it pairs naturally with the other minerals in a well-formulated electrolyte blend.

Why INOMANLYTES Uses It

When I was thinking through the formula for INOMANLYTES, I kept coming back to one question: what would I actually want to give someone in my ICU who needed to rehydrate fast but could not get an IV?

Sodium first. Then potassium. Then magnesium.

Pink Himalayan salt handles the sodium piece in a way that feels clean and intentional — not like we just dumped processed table salt into a packet and called it a day. Paired with coconut water powder for potassium and calamansi for Vitamin C and flavor, it creates a formula that covers the full picture.

Nothing in there because it looks good on a label. Everything in there because it belongs.

INOMANLYTES is still in development — but this is the foundation we are building on.
